Arab Christians, or Christians in Arab countries, have had for years an existential concern due to the uncontrolled terrorist violence in the region, involving local forces in a number of countries, fueled and steered by regimes, states, and regional and international forces with conflicting and competing agendas.
The legitimacy of this concern is undeniable. But it is just as obvious that this violence has mainly affected the Sunni Arab majority and threatened the existence of the national state in some countries like Syria and Iraq.
Despite its legitimacy, the Christians’ concern should not make them lose sight of the meaning of their presence and historical role in the Arab region and in their homelands.
The Christians are not just right holders whose rights are being violated as a result of the assaults perpetrated against them by official and jihadist extremism that did not spare anyone. They have also, and above all, options that are consistent with their belief in living together in peace, equal and different, and with their identity and sense of belonging at the national and Arab levels.
The purpose of the conference is twofold:
Our goal would be to define an Arab path to modernity.
