March 14 General Secretariat held their weekly meeting and issued the following statement:
The participants discussed the general situation in Lebanon, especially the state of anticipation and anxiety due to the feverish race between the state of tension which warns of brutal consequences, and between the requirements for internal immunization and the maintenance of stability.
- The participants stressed on the necessity of advancing the legitimate authorities in its security, political and diplomatic areas in order to provide an internal and regional safety net away from the waiting phase the political parties are in despite the GS support for the efforts made by in the state’s senior officials towards friendly countries involved in helping Lebanon in its stability, especially Premier Saad Hariri’s latest diplomatic movement which stressed that the actual assistance for Lebanon should occur through the state and the legal institutions.
- The state duties make it imperative for the political forces participating in the Parliament and the Government to facilitate the work of the institutions and let the legitimate authority perform its duties, rather than having some of these forces disrupt the Government and the internal dialog. These forces’ negative position threatens the citizens’ daily interests and enhances their concern. The participants call upon these disruptive forces to change their position and stop using the weak pretext of the “false witnesses” issue, knowing that disrupting the work of institutions in Beirut does not affect the work of the Hague Tribunal; but rather hits the ability of the state to assume responsibility in this delicate stage whether before the indictment or after it.
- The participants refused again some parties’ adoption of the language of treason and threat which insinuates that there is a team in Lebanon which wants justice while the other team does not want it. This is a dangerous issue and should not be overlooked. The participants call on MP Michel Aoun to stop his “nationalism” method of talking which he uses to justify his present positions. This method was used by him in a way that is contrary to his renewed “nationalism” convictions when he claimed himself the patron of “Syrian accountability act” in 2003 as well as his patronage of resolution 1559 in 2004.
- March 14 forces declare their support for the Mufti of Lebanon’s initiative aimed at formulating a covenant and Charter between Muslims and Christians in the Arab world. The forces see in this initiative a confirmation on co-existence in Lebanon on one hand, and a joint Christian-Muslim responsibility in the Arab Christian sufferings in more than one region on the other hand. It also proves the ability of Lebanese Muslims and Christians to play a key role in the regions issues, as well as being an initiative which meets with what the Synod of the Eastern Churches reached.
